OK so I am still sat in the staff room, still need to pack and get everything sorted, and only about 3 hours until i need to leave. Feeling nevous, scared and really excited in equal measures. Chilean’s heathquake was 600 times more powerful than the Haitian one.

In Europe we’ve got a tropical storm called Xinthya, 50 and more deads in France, one week ago Madeira was partly destroyed by the same storm.

When you were kid, have you ever thought that a tropical storm in Europe would happen in February?

So, that’s that, then. A 250-page Government-backed report that provides a road map for our digital lives, from the London Olympics of 2012 and beyond.

Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report contained few surprises, although there were one or two headline-grabbing initiatives.

Most notable is the £6 per year “broadband tax” levied against every household with a telephone line, which will help to build a £200 million war chest to fund the roll-out of next-generation internet services.

The Government has pledged that all households in the UK will have access to 2 megabits per second broadband by 2012, increasing to 50 megabits per second by 2017. Leaving aside, for one moment, the question of whether such speeds can be considered adequate now, let alone in five or more years’ time, the Government’s desire to have a digitally enfranchised citizenship is laudable… more from Telegraph.co.uk

Good morning, I’m writing about the airbus 330 (flight AF447) who vanished just a week ago! I didn’t want to post because, till 2 days ago, they hadn’t found anything at all.

A missing Air France jet carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris ran into a tower of thunderstorms and heavy turbulence over the Atlantic Ocean, officials said amid fears that all aboard were lost

Chief Air France spokesman Francois Brousse said “it is possible” the plane was hit by lightning, but aviation experts expressed doubt that a bolt of lightning was enough to bring the plane down.

In these couple of days more debris and personal belongings have been recovered from the Atlantic by navy crews searching for the Air France jet which crashed exactly one week ago.

So far 17 bodies have also been retrieved.

“Euronews.net” – The Brazilian-led team is concentrating on an area about 70 kilometres from where the plane sent out messages signalling electrical faults before disappearing.

The wreckage and any bodies found are being transported to a the nearby Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, where the military has set up a staging post for the search operation.

It is still not known what caused the crash but one possibility is that speed sensors may have iced up giving faulty readings causing the pilots to fly too fast into violent equatorial storms. you can read more here
